Challenges Facing Elderly Singaporeans in the Different Communities
Singapore’s rapidly ageing population presents numerous challenges on the road ahead. To monitor the ageing landscape from the perspective of households, the Centre for Research on the Economics of Ageing (CREA) at Singapore Management University fields a monthly survey to more than 12,000 Singaporeans aged 50 to 70.
After two years of operation, the Singapore Life Panel® (SLP) is now the world’s largest longitudinal survey on ageing, and receives around 8,000 responses every single month on subjects as diverse as work, spending, health and well-being. As our databank grows ever larger, the distinct challenges facing each community are becoming clear. CREA is hosting this panel discussion to discuss the ageing issues facing the elderly from each community, and to raise public awareness of these challenges.
Moderated by Jiaming Ju, Associate Director at CREA, panel members include representatives from the Singapore Muslim Women’s Association (PPIS), Chinese Development Assistance Council (CDAC), Sree Narayana Mission (Singapore) and The Eurasian Association (EA).
Some of the key questions that will be explored by the panel include (but are not limited to):
• What are the challenges faced by the seniors in your community?
• What kind of ongoing support does your community provide to elders who are no longer able to fend for themselves?
• Are intergenerational differences more pronounced among some community groups?
• Is the kampong spirit still alive?
• To what extent is filial piety still relevant in today’s caregiving arrangements?
• What programmes does the community offer to elderlies?
This promises to be an insightful event. You are welcome to attend and join the discussion.
